Hi, I’m Sophia!

Passionate about sports media and obsessed with the control room.

I’m a senior at UNC Chapel Hill studying Political Science and Media and Journalism with a Sports Communication certificate. Born and raised in New Jersey, I never pictured myself south of Maryland. But coming to North Carolina changed my life.

Growing up, I didn’t care much for sports. But from the first Carolina football game I attended, something clicked. Suddenly, I couldn’t get enough. Although I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to be apart of the world of sports.

Entering the Hussman School of Journalism and Media I wasn’t sure where exactly my place would be. Eventually, I found my way into Curtis Media Center and with it found my passion. Starting off operating any part of the control room that I could, I quickly worked my way to the Technical Director board and eventually took my spot as a director. While I love every aspect of the control room, from the first cue I called I knew I found what I was meant to do.

Learning the basics of each position wasn’t enough. I wanted to know what made each computer work and what to do when it seemed they weren’t working anymore. I approached our Broadcast Engineer with the interest, and starting working with him as an assistant. I’ve learned the ins and outs of our control room operations and how to troubleshoot a variety of problems with the technology in the studio.

Aside from the time I spend in the control room, I also spend a lot of time in ice rinks of the Chapel Hill area. With my passion for sports and interest in media, I seized the opportunity to become the first Director of Media for the newly founded Women’s Hockey Club. Shortly after, I joined the Men’s Hockey Club as a videographer.

Sports media isn’t about athletics. It’s about telling stories that bring people together. From our basketball team’s devastating loss at the 2022 championship game, to our women soccer team’s incredible national championship win this year, every game is a story. A story that transcends the players and the scores. Watching these games are the moments where unlikely friendships are made, families bond, and undeniable connections are strengthened. I want nothing more than to help make these moments possible through the technical side of broadcast production.
